What it is
Scaling removes the hardened plaque, or tartar, that builds up along and below the gum line and cannot be removed by brushing. Polishing then smooths the tooth surface. It is the routine treatment for gum inflammation and a preventive measure against gum disease.
When you might need it
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Visible deposits or staining along the gum line
- Bad breath that does not settle with brushing
- Six to twelve months since your last cleaning
What happens during your visit
An ultrasonic scaler removes deposits from the tooth surfaces and along the gum line — you feel vibration and a spray of water. The teeth are then polished. If any area is uncomfortable, tell the dentist; sensitive areas can be numbed.
Aftercare
Gums may feel tender and teeth mildly sensitive for a few days. Warm salt water rinses help. Continue brushing twice daily and cleaning between the teeth.
