What it is
When decay creates a cavity, the affected tooth structure is removed and the space is restored, usually with a tooth-coloured composite material. Restoring a cavity early can prevent the decay from reaching the nerve and needing root canal treatment later.
When you might need it
- A visible hole, chip or dark spot on a tooth
- Sensitivity to cold, hot or sweet foods
- Food repeatedly lodging in the same tooth
- An old filling that has worn, chipped or come out
What happens during your visit
The tooth is numbed where needed, the decayed portion is removed, and the restoration is placed, shaped to your bite and finished. Straightforward fillings are usually completed in a single visit; deeper cavities may need a protective lining and a further review.
Aftercare
Avoid chewing hard food on that side for the rest of the day. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is common. Tell the clinic if the bite feels high or the sensitivity increases.
