What it is
A routine visit in which the dentist examines each tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissues of the mouth, with X-rays taken only where they add information. Problems found early are usually simpler and less expensive to treat than the same problems found late.
When you might need it
- Six months or more since your last check-up
- Tooth pain, sensitivity, or a tooth that feels different
- Bleeding gums, or bad breath that does not settle
- Before starting orthodontic, implant or cosmetic treatment
What happens during your visit
The dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks existing fillings and crowns, and takes X-rays if needed. Findings are explained in plain language along with the treatment options, what each one involves, and what is likely to happen if you choose to wait.
