What it is
A crown is a cap that covers and protects a tooth that is weak, cracked or root canal treated. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining to the teeth on either side. Both restore chewing function and appearance, and are made in ceramic, metal-ceramic or zirconia depending on the tooth and your preference.
When you might need it
- After root canal treatment, to protect the tooth
- A cracked, heavily filled or badly worn tooth
- One or more missing teeth affecting chewing or speech
- An old crown or bridge that has loosened or worn down
What happens during your visit
The tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is fitted. The permanent crown or bridge is fitted at a later visit, with the shade matched to your other teeth and the bite adjusted before it is cemented.
Aftercare
Avoid hard and sticky food while the temporary crown is in place. Once the permanent one is fitted, clean around it carefully — a bridge also needs cleaning underneath, with a floss threader or an interdental brush.
