What it is
A structured examination that measures how clearly you see and checks the health of the front and the back of the eye. Several eye conditions develop without early symptoms, so a periodic check-up is the usual way they are picked up in time.
When you might need it
- Blurred vision, eye strain or frequent headaches
- More than a year since your last eye examination
- Diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease
- You are over 40, when routine checks are generally advised
What happens during your visit
Your vision is tested on the chart, your spectacle power is measured, eye pressure is checked, and the doctor examines the front of the eye and the retina. Dilating drops may be used, which blur near vision for a few hours. Findings and any prescription are explained before you leave.
Aftercare
If dilating drops were used, near vision stays blurred and light feels bright for a few hours. Please arrange not to drive yourself home, and bring sunglasses.
