What it is
Extraction is advised when a tooth is beyond repair, when infection cannot be resolved, or when a wisdom tooth is impacted and causing repeated pain or damage to the tooth in front. It is considered after the options for keeping the tooth have been assessed.
When you might need it
- A tooth broken or decayed beyond restoration
- Repeated pain, swelling or food trapping around a wisdom tooth
- Severe gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- Removal advised as part of orthodontic treatment
What happens during your visit
An X-ray is taken to plan the removal. The area is numbed with local anaesthesia and the tooth is removed with controlled technique. An impacted wisdom tooth may need a minor surgical procedure and stitches; if so, that is explained, along with the risks, before anything is started.
Aftercare
Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. Avoid spitting, rinsing, hot drinks and smoking for 24 hours, and take the prescribed medication. Some swelling and discomfort for two to three days is expected. Contact the clinic if bleeding continues or if pain worsens after the third day.
